Mission: Community Scarf

by Alexandria Merchant on 10 January 2025

We are inviting Thurrock knitters to help us create a Community Scarf coined the Scarf of Kindness. Whether you knit with a group or by yourself, are new to the craft or a wool wizard, be a part of making Thurrock a symbol of community and collaboration! 🫶

All abilities are welcome to get involved, so let’s get knitting!

REQUIREMENTS:
Double Knit, 6mm needles, 30 stitches, 6″ wide.
Any pattern/colour and any length welcome.

Feel free to add your favourite community groups or organisation into your design to shine a light on the wonderful services in Grays and Thurrock. But don’t be nervous, the scarf doesn’t have to be perfect!

Cut off date – snip snip! ✂️

Arts Outburst need your knitted contributions by Friday 7th February.
Drop-off your knitted contribution to Arts Outburst on the 2nd floor of the Thameside Complex, Orsett Road, Grays by then to allow enough time for us to join all of the pieces together before the big unveiling.

Grand reveal

The Community Scarf will be featured in Troupe’s cabaret evening Troupe! Presents on the 21st of Feb that is open to the public at Arts Outburst Studios and then displayed within our space, which is nice and accessible to the public.

Troupe! Presents is a product of our Creative Development Programme for adults. Participants have curated an evening of entertainment made up of their own creative skills with the help and guidance of industry pros within their Troupe! meet ups. Tickets can be booked online for £5.

The future of the scarf…
After that, we would love to keep the Community Scarf as a symbol that can feature at events and projects across Thurrock. Perhaps there is even a way that it can keep growing?
But, one stitch at a time…

How to get involved

Knitting groups or knit with friends
Feel free to share the poster below or any info on our website and socials with any knitting groups you may be a part of – contributions for our community scarf could be a fun project to work on together.
This is a great way of spotlighting local organisations in the area and immortalising them in the scarf.

Solo stitcher
If knitting is your sacred you time or something you do to unwind, then why not give our requirements a go and get knitting your own mini scarf to get incorporated into the Scarf of Kindness.

Knit with us
On Fridays between 12:30pm – 2:30pm, our studio doors are open to our warm space and you’re more than welcome to come into our space, bring the supply bag and knit in our cozy space. As a team our knitting skills are minimal however, some Troupe! members are showing us a thing or two… So, why not join us for tea and a biscuit and some knitting!
